Tamil film industry always has directors who could establish themselves in their specialized genres and Chimbu Devan proved his specialties in fantasy movies for yet another time with his work on ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’. In spite of his previous movie ‘Arai En 305-il Kadavul’ bombed at box office, his choice of artist has always been unique and so does in IKMS. It’s quite obvious that he never wanted to take a chance in his script this time and the efforts paid well today.
The movie begins with intro to the cow boy world at different geographical locations and it lands into the cow boy civilization of Tamil Nadu (fictional locations) to take off the story. The intro scene of dual role Raghava Lawrence is very much in a comical way and it didn’t miss to tickle our ribs. Every artist played their roles well and it was significant. None of the characters are wasted. The locations and sets gave yet another perfect blend to this movie and cinematography with brown base (well… am in’t well versed of that jargon… ) justified the time period of this story. The only area of lengthy film rolls is in the crystal maze treasure hunt, but it never failed to make the audience enjoy few frames. I initially had pre-conceived notion, this movie could only interest the kids, but I was surprised to see adults enjoying the movie. It’s a family entertainer.
The director’s touch of relating the real world example into reel world has been through out the movie right from roping in yesteryear actors fame to characters, town names, 33% women reservation, US tag line… yes Chimbu Devan didn’t stop here, with one of the questions to the crystal maze treasure hunt puzzle, he took the opportunity of giving a hard blow to people of Tamil Nadu being great spectator and showing a don’t care attitude towards fellow tamil problem in the neighboring country. Selvaraghavan’s “Aayirathil Oruvan” is a movie of it’s kind which had a thin line on demolition of migrated tamils by people in power of their home land in the name of vengeance and focused on bringing the heir back, but Chimbu Devan emphasized the need of a leader. He simplified the necessity of leadership and the importance of a suppressed community to be resilient despite the missing leadership. His concept of an illusionary leader boosting the morale of people to realize their strength is essential in current scenario; no matter the leader is killed; we need to rise to be heard. It doesn’t really mean we need to be violent to achieve the lost, nor the Gandhigiri is the alternate, neither giving up is the best choice… we need to be in the system and voice within to achieve the basic necessities and then improving ourselves is the best choice.
In current scenario we do see many of the expat Sri Lankan Tamils and fellow tamils of Tamil Nadu voicing towards agitation in the island nation and supporting for another rebel within suppressed community. It’s easy for us to support it, because we have all our base set, we have proper education, we have daily food, we have all infrastructure from bathing to sleeping and we are making noise in a high pitch, but we forget to think of those people who are caged in the camps by the bureaucrats. They were taken into the camps in the name of rehabilitation and for vocational trainings by their government, but the actual scenario is nothing other than stopping the suppressed community grouping back. The people suffer in lack of basic amenities such as water, food, shelter and rest rooms in the camps. The government is neither bothered of people unable to bath for weeks together nor of their clean input and output process. In one of the recent BBC article, I happen to read they aren’t tortured much these days and similarly they aren’t taken care either. Most of the people in those camps are sitting idle for almost a year; they aren’t given any vocational trainings or education to improve their standards.
By doing so the bureaucrats easily achieve their target of erasing the sixth sense from those innocent tamils and no wonder even if those inmates are given hardship work in future in turn of single time food for the day. We don’t want yet another Nazi type concentration camp in our neighboring country and let’s not start another bloody campaign. Talking about the past and building yet another violent future is not the need of time, let’s look out for ways to bring up those suppressed people out of the open air prison and work towards their upliftment.
Pen is always mightier than sword, create a buzz, free the innocent tamils, provide them a promising future… A minute thought on them before our food or luxury that we enjoy on daily basis might provoke to share it with them. Let tamil children of future in Sri Lanka carry laptops and other constructive gadgets than holding AK 47s and detonators, let their necks be garlanded with roses than the cyanides tied and let tamils get equal opportunity in all aspects at Sri Lanka. I know the road is full of thorns or land mines, after all we either made them grow or planted them, let’s remove it and reach the peak… Iron forts can not only be demolished by a rugged lions, it can also be melted by brave lions…
